Snap has launched a web app for its flagship product, Snapchat, giving users access to the platform without the need to use a mobile phone.

At first, the feature will be available to Snapchat+ subscribers, allowing them to access the platform’s calling and messaging features.

The social media platform said it plans to roll out the feature for all users soon on web.snapchat.com Chrome and Firefox browsers.

To begin with, only the platform’s major messaging features will be available immediately, with Lenses for video calls to be added soon.

The move could be coming as a result of the user demographic as browser-based applications are often more typically used by desktop and laptop users.

Approximately 80% of Snapchat’s advertising audience profile is aged 18 and over, according to research from DataReportal.

Rival platform TikTok is now the platform that resonates the most with under-18s.

Snap said the move was driven by “so many in our community spending more time online, whether for remote learning or working, streaming or just plain browsing.

“We saw a huge opportunity to make it easier for our community to stay connected throughout their day and we cannot wait to bring our favorite fundamental Snapchat capabilities to the web.”

Users can browse the app securely with a privacy screen that hides the Snapchat Web window and users’ conversations if they click away for another task.
